A Plumbing Drum Trap

by Scott Rodgers

The plumbing traps are essential as far as the drainage setup of your plumbing framework is concerned. The traps ensure that the sewer gases and said waste discharge well.

The essence of the traps is attributed to the two basic functions that they perform. On one hand, they prevent the sewer gases from entering back into the building and on the other hand, they catch the objects which are not meant to be drained. The name 'trap' is accredited to this particular function only.

A plumbing drum trap is a variety of the traps that is not in practice anymore. They are considered outdated and are replaced by more advanced and sophisticated p-traps and s-traps. The piping setup is made less cumbersome under the new types of traps. However, the drum traps offered their own advantages. If your plumbing setup is equipped with a drum trap then there is no need to go for the replacement as long as it is operating normally.

The drum traps are identified by their drum-shaped apparatus. A small-sized steel drum that acts as a trap is employed in such traps. If you locate an access cap on the level of the floor close to a plumbing segment then it is a drum trap.

The ease of access associated with the drum traps is one thing that popularized them sometime back. This feature helps the plumbers a lot during the unclogging job of the drainage pipe. The plumber's snake tool also finds an easy entry into the trap and the clogs in the form of hair, debris etc. are easily removed.

The traps in general maintain a water-seal in their setting such that the sewer gases don't revert back to the spaces of the home. Some amount of water has to be maintained in the trap always. This is provided by the water that drains down the pipe.

Always keep a large-sized container or bucket in tact while uncapping a drum trap. This is because water may gush out of the setting. Keep the supervision of an expert handy to assist you throughout the life of the project.

Make the replacement of the drum trap only when it starts giving you troubles.
