With the calendar rolling over into the depths of spring we're finally seeing the end of another long and lonely winter with nothing to do but twiddle our thumbs. If you've been cooped up for months with cabin fever pressing in then you're more than likely looking for some home improvement ideas to get your hands busy. Here are a few popular home improvement ideas to keep you busy as you transition from spring to summer.
1. Check out the roof – Leaks can seem to come out of the blue. With all the heavy rain this year be sure to thoroughly inspect your roof to insure that you won't have costly damage later. Check for missing or loose shingles and gutters that have seen better days. Don't forget to check the flashing, chimney if you have one, and the roof vents.
2. Inspect your Windows – Freezing water has a way of damaging the structure of your home, even on small levels. This cumulative damage each year leads to failure in various areas including the windows. Check for cracks in the glass, failing caulk, mold, mildew and fungus in the frames, moisture accumulation and overall weather proofing of your windows.
3. Replace Windows – You may be surprised that your windows need an upgrade. Don't skimp here. A less efficient window could cost you more in the long run. Keep your home cool in the summer by swapping out older windows with new low-e coated and UV coated windows, and double or triple pane versions.
4. Examine the Siding – If you've got vinyl siding and you live in the colder climate regions then you need to inspect your siding. Vinyl becomes brittle when temperatures drop and can easily be damaged. For other more durable types of siding, check for flaking or peeling paint, missing or loose pieces, etc.
5. Check your Foundation – As the snow piles on it can compress the ground around your home. This is made worse by overflowing gutters that drain against the home when the ice melts leading to saturation of the ground around your house. This causes the ground to erode and settle more, creating areas for water to collect. Make sure the ground still slopes away from the home to allow for proper drainage.
6. Check your Ceiling – Check your ceiling for water spots or other moisture damage. When ice damns up along the drain line of your roof it can cause a backup into the attic. As this ice melts, the water drains into the attic and down into the ceiling. Fix the issue, then replace the ceiling in that spot.
Lastly you can work with a contractor do some home improvement in the attic. The break in the weather is a good time to get into the attic and install a radiant barrier. This type of foil insulation works to support your typical insulation by blocking over 90% of the heat that normally passes through your roof and attic space. There's no shortage of updates and maintenance on your home – if you're looking for a good home improvement project start by covering needs and necessity then move on to luxury remodeling.
