Even newbie webmasters know that the more links they can get to their websites, the higher their search engine rankings are likely to be. What they may not realize is how many different ways there are to obtain those links.
Here are my favorites.
1. Either submit your site to directories or hire a service to do so (it is quite inexpensive). Concentrate on the directories in your niche and directories with Google PR of 4 and above.
2. Submit your site to online classified ad pages. Most are either free or very inexpensive.
3. Request link exchanges with other webmasters. This takes persistence, but is worth it if you have a reasonable success rate.
4. Do some podcasting.
5. Make a few simple videos and submit them.
6. Sign up at at social bookmark and other social websites. It's quick, it's easy, and it can really help you.
7. Issue press releases. A quick search will yield lots of advice on how to do it, and services and software that can help. It is much easier than it sounds.
8. Blog. It's almost a must. Link from your blog to your website.
9. Write articles on subjects of interest to your potential visitors and submit them to article distribution sites. Include a a link to your website in the author's box.
10. Make appropriate comments on blog sites and forums. Note the word "appropriate".
If you are not already engaged in all of these activities, try at least a few new ones; the more the merrier. Soon you'll be in position to judge which activities have the greatest payoff for the time you spend on them. At that point you are in great shape.
